Better questions. Better decisions.

A practical starting point for understanding rights, collection and commercial terms. General education; every catalog and agreement needs its own review.

01 / Publishing fundamentals

One song, two sets of rights.

A composition and a sound recording are distinct works. A writer's share in the song does not automatically mean ownership of a particular recording. Establishing both layers helps organize publishing, distribution and licensing conversations.

02 / Metadata & mechanical royalties

A collection gap starts with a question.

For US digital mechanical royalties, The MLC distinguishes unmatched uses from unclaimed ownership shares. Review work registrations, writer information and claimed shares before assuming money is missing. International collection follows different organizations and rules; no universal recovery deadline applies.

03 / Advances & agreement review

Read the economics beyond the advance.

Compare the upfront payment with term, rights, exclusivity, revenue participation and recoupment. Ask which income recoups the advance, what costs may be charged and what happens at the end of the term. A sale, license and financing arrangement change different things. Evaluate each proposal on its own terms and seek qualified independent advice before signing.
